The Royal Bank of Scotland credit card is part of a group that was founded in 1727. The Royal Bank of Scotland credit card is provided by one of Europe’s leading financial services groups. By market capitalisation it is the second largest bank in the UK and in Europe and ranks fifth in the world.

In March 2000 they completed the acquisition of NatWest in a £21 billion deal that was the largest takeover in British banking history. The enlarged Group has a market capitalisation of £51 billion as at 4 August 2003, compared with £19.7 billion immediately after the takeover. It has more than 20 million UK personal customers, 2,287 UK branches and total assets at 31 December 2002 of £412 billion. The Group employs over 110,000 staff worldwide.

In the first half of 2003, the Group increased its profit before tax, goodwill amortisation and integration costs by 10 per cent to £3,451 million. Profit before tax increased 25 per cent to £2,896 million.

Total income was up 11 per cent and all the Group’s divisions increased customer numbers. In addition to the provision of a full range of banking services the Group also includes other organisations well known in financial circles:

Ulster Bank in Northern Ireland, which also has a very strong presence in the Republic of Ireland. Coutts Group, the international operator in the private banking sector, managing the portfolios of 70,000 wealthy customers via its 38 offices throughout the world. Direct Line, one of the major direct motor insurance operators in the UK and Europe and a leading provider of financial services by telephone.

Citizens Financial Group, based in Rhode Island (USA), the second largest bank in New England. Lombard, one of the world's leading asset finance companies.

The Group enjoys leading positions across a range of different areas. It is number one in the UK for corporate and commercial banking, small business customers, offshore banking, private banking, asset finance and telephone motor insurance.

It is number two in the UK for retail banking and credit cards. In addition to the UK, the Group has offices in Europe, the US, and Asia. A strategic alliance with SCH of Spain provides scope for development of financial service activities across Europe.
